A major winter storm has its aim on south central Nebraska and north central Kansas beginning late Monday night through Tuesday. Widespread snow will be the problem initially, but strong winds will develop as the storm pulls east Tuesday evening. Widespread blowing and drifting snow should be expected Tuesday night across the region. Here are the storm highlights:
- Snow beginning late Monday night, and continuing through Tuesday evening.
- Widespread storm total snowfall in excess of 6" with some areas measuring over 9" by Wednesday morning
- Periods of the heaviest snowfall rates (1"+ per hour) Tuesday afternoon and early Tuesday evening
- Strong north winds of 20 to 30 mph by Tuesday evening overtake the region
- Widespread blowing and drifting snow Tuesday night and early Wednesday
- Accumulating snow will end around midnight Tuesday night
- Major travel impacts due to the heavy snow and blowing snow. Dangerous travel conditions are possible by Tuesday night, especially anyone traveling east and south of Lexington, Nebraska
- Major impacts on schools and community activities both Tuesday and Wednesday
- Frigid temperatures will spill across the region Wednesday, with highs only in the teens and wind chills below zero.
