John D. Hinds (1923-1998)--John Hinds was born and raised in
Lexington, Nebraska. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17. He
served aboard the light cruiser St. Louis,"the Lucky Lou", in
the South Pacific during 9 campaigns. For his heroism, Joh
received 10 medals and citations, including the Silver Star 
and two purple hearts. His vessel took him into battle in the
Aleutian Islands, The Solomon Islands and Okinawa. His
wounds mostly stemmed from aerial attacks by Japanese
fighters and bombers.
