Dear fellow driver,
Today a young woman’s life was in jeopardy, or perhaps it was a child choking…actually, I am not sure; it may have been a house on fire… it really does not matter. What matters is that you and I were on the highway together. You may not have seen me, although I doubt it as my truck is emblazoned with a large KRVN logo, but I was the one that pulled over as the emergency vehicles were navigating the traffic we were in. Do you remember?
Perhaps this will jog your memory.
I was in front of you, observing the posted speed limit. You were right behind me. Of course I do not know who you were communicating with, but in my side mirror I could see you texting furiously. The sounds of sirens started to wail from behind us, and as the first fire truck came into view in my mirrors, I began to slow down.
Do you remember yet? Might remember that you got a very nasty look on your face and slammed your hand onto the steering wheel and as I started to move to the shoulder, you began to look over yours to see if you could pass me.
Surely you remember this part…
You passed me, cutting in front of the fire truck which was being followed by an ambulance.
As you increased your speed to stay ahead of the emergency vehicles, you came upon a traffic light. From my vantage point on the side of the road, I could see you fuming as you sat waiting. I also saw the emergency vehicles stop behind you. You were blocking them all.
A truck driver managed to move to his right and allowed the emergency responders to get through the intersection and they were soon out of my site.
Because I had pulled over, it took me a minute to regain my own position in the traffic so I lost sight of you.
This is why I am writing you this letter.
I was wondering if you made it home on time? You seemed in such a hurry. Was your family okay when you arrived? I hope so, it would have been a very strange coincidence that those responders were slowed down while responding to a call at YOUR HOUSE.
By the way, I know you did not ask, but my family is fine. Thankfully they were not responding to a call at my house either.
Well, I have to go, but am glad I got the time to send you a note.
Happy driving! Stay healthy!
Our emergency responders place their lives on the line each and every day for all of us. Sometimes it is SPECIFICALLY for us. Remember next time you are on the road and hear those sirens…they COULD be heading to YOUR house.
