Deer John,

While humans tend to fall in love in the Spring, it is this time of year that deer start to look at each other and hear Air Supply music.  When you mix that situation with fields full of hungry combines, you get blood smears.  Lot’s of them.

Thursday night I was forced to drive across the State of Iowa after 11 PM. It was a frightening experience.  I cannot believe how many deer are on the roads and the evidence of previous crashes was widespread and haunting as I drove.

Try to remember that deer can suddenly appear in strangest places.  Watch carefully along creeks, bodies of water and where a fence line or tree line meets the road.  Remember that deer and tornadoes are similar in that if there is one, there is probably at least one more right behind it or in the near vicinity.

Don’t drive when you are too tired.  You need to have quick reflexes to avoid a deer and “fuzzy eyes” are not going to help.

Deer-related auto accidents jumped 54% in Nebraska during the past two years according to a recent State Farm estimate and Nebraska and iowa are considered high-risk states when computing the chances of a deer-automobile collision.

Deer-vehicle collisions cause more than 150 fatalities a year in the United States, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The average property damage cost from the nation's estimated 2.4 million annual deer-vehicle accidents was $3,050.

Be careful when you are out and about. Stay safe.
