PROPOSITION.  Are you going to the NCBA convention in San Antonio?  Wanna get in on a little action?  I would like to organize a little bit of very civil disobediance.  I received yet ANOTHER email from CattleNetwork.com (even though I tell them almost weekly to take me off their list).  The top story was an interview with Dr. Tom Field, who is going to be conducting some sort of meeting on the "future of the cattle business" at the convention.  Link here:

  I'm reading this interview and - no offense Dr. Field - it sounds like Obama's teleprompter wrote his responses.  He's talking, but there is no MEANING to what he says.  And he uses lots of trendy buzzwords and phrases.  "Holistic".  "Engaging atmosphere".  "Supply chain".  Huh?  Wha?  

Here is what I propose.  I would like at least one person in every one of these sessions at the NCBA convention to stand up at the end of the session before it breaks and ask this question:

"What does this have to do with me making money on my cattle?"

That's it.  Be polite.  No need to be snarky.  Just pose that simple question.  And don't be afraid to politely follow-up.  If a speaker starts talking about how, for example, supply chain communication and beef quality is the key to profitability, I would respond by saying that I ALREADY PRODUCE safe, wholesome, delicious beef and have been for years.  Or, if a speaker starts talking about retail demand, I would ask what retail demand has to do with ME, PERSONALLY making money.  Retail demand seems to relate to super markets and restaurants, and besides, I've been listening to talks on retail demand for 20+ years, and it hasn't helped me one bit.   

I think it is time for this to start happening.  The mainstream guys have had a free pass in terms of meaningless rhetoric for decades, and it seems to be getting worse and worse.  They seem to be emulating Washington politicians, and that is NOT good.  It is time to start holding some tootsies to the fire, gentlemen.
