Russ Barth of Doniphan is back with us again with a very rare and collectible Allis Chalmers Model A. Russ has always been a devout Allis collector and he sought out this week's machine to add to his collection.
The story on this tractor all started from Russ getting a phone call about an old AC power unit used on a local irrigation well. The owner wanted to know if Russ was interested in buying the power unit. It ran just fine. Russ identified it as being the same motor that was used in the "A" and bought it.
He contacted a friend in Minnesota who is an antique tractor buyer and told him to please find him an A to match his motor. According to Russ, only 1300 Model A's were made in 1937. The production runs were from '36 to '42. About 300 to 400 wound up in the bottom of the Atalantic Ocean during Lend-Lease in WWII, sunk by a German U-Boat.
The tractor buyer found one on an antique tractor sale in New Mexico and bought it for him. Russ says all the tractor was at that time was a rear-end and a lot of parts! After some TLC, here is how the tractor works now. A picture is included from the Antique Tractor Show in Ravenna last June. Thanks for letting us share this very cool tractor, Russ!
