Happy Day!
I was reading an article from June 25, 2010 from the Associated Press about the value of the grocery store.
Closures of grocery stores rob towns of their vitality, with the loss of gathering places and sales tax revenue to fund local governments. Small communities find themselves in downward spirals when such businesses close.
Sure I am in favor of lower prices that we sometimes think we get at a bigger city, but think about what that could really mean for the town. This article notes that in Kansas, 38 percent of the 213 groceries in towns of less than 2500 people closed between 2006 and 2009. Once the grocery store closes, seldom do they reopen.
So thank YOU to the local grocery stores! You too can thank your local grocery store for helping to be strong and keeping the town alive! You would be surprised what a thank you can mean for them - and for you!
