Happy 40th anniversary of the first moon landing!  Human beings do a lot of truly horrible things, but every once in a while we get our acts together sufficient to do something really cool.  Such was the case 40 years ago today.

Billy Feedyard called me today to tell me what a bad broker I am.  Billy had watched a show on the ag markets on that rural cable channel last night.  There was a commodity broker on discussing the corn market.  He had a 15 minute segment.  Billy said that the broker first stated that a weak US dollar would lead to increased exports which would lead to higher corn prices.  Bam.  There you go. 

But then, the broker ALSO said that feedlots were low on cattle, which meant that corn demand would be curtailed, which implied lower corn prices.  Bada-bing.  There you go.  The broker then did a mini-advertisement for himself and repeated his toll-free number twice.  This monologue took up the entire 15 minute segment.  It was all VERY impressive. 

Billy called me and asked why I can't tell him macho, smart-sounding stuff like that too.  He said all I ever talk about is "stupid girly-math".  He said if I was a REALLY good broker, I would be able to outline both the bull and bear argument for every market, thus leaving him more confused after the conversation than he was going into it.  That is what he's paying me for, afterall.   

Hee hee.  Billy and I had a good laugh.  But, the truth is, I still catch myself doing exactly that sometimes.  I'll remind you, but I'm also reminding myself here, that the only truly honest answer to the question, "What are these markets going to do?", is, "I DON'T KNOW."
