My father-in-law, Alphonse Wolak was in the Air force in World War 2.
He was a gunner in a bomber, which meant there wasn't enough room
or him to wear a parachute. It was tethered to him at his side to put
on quickly if needed. When the plane was shot down Al was knocked
unconscious and when he woke up he found himself gently floating
to earth in part of the airplane. Much like a leaf falling from a tree.
Al believes it was the hand of God lowering him. He was the only
survivor. Al was injured, but alive when the Germans captured him.
Alphonse remained a P.O.W. until the war ended nearly a year later.
Alphonse is well into his 80's now but still gets around his farm in
Minnesota, although slower these days. Thanks for you service Al!
And thanks for such a wonderful daughter!
