Best & Worst Halloween Treats - Win a Taylor Swift CD
Posted in Adam in the Afternoon at 12:41PM on 10/27/2009

My Great Grandmother would always hand out popcorn balls that were colored orange, red, or green on Halloween.  I never liked them.  It's quite difficult for a small kid to fit his mouth, even one as large as mine, around a petrified softball sized mass of popcorn.

What treats did you hate to see your plastic jack-o-lantern each year?  Are there homemade items that you hand out that are always a hit?  Leave your comments below and include your email address (it will not be posted).  I will select two people to win a copy of Taylor Swifts "Fearless" Platinum Edition CD/DVD.  Just leave a comment to win.  Deadline 3pm CT 10/30/09.

Tootsie Rolls are on the WORST list? Who are these people? Are they American? SERIOUSLY! Whoppers are on the GOOD list and SMARTIES are on the WORST list? What horrible accident did these people suffer through that damaged their taste buds?! Whoppers are chocolate covered moth balls! Bring me your Smarties and Tootsie Rolls, people. Drop them at KRVN and I will pick them up!

Ok.. I'll go first. The worst treat my kids brought home was the apple slices. While as a mom I appreciate that, my boys didn't. The Reese's peanut butter cups were their favorites. My favorite is tootsie rolls, my boys save them for mom.

I see Tootsie Rolls made the list of "worst" treats . . . the absolute worst treats I would receive were the colored fruit flavored tootsie roll clones. I never could tell what the heck flavor they were aiming for. Cheap, cheap, Yuck! To this day, I won't buy a bag of treats that has those little demons in it.

Bit-O-Honey, but you missed the important value of a popcorn ball. With talent and practice you could drop the neighborhood bully at ten yeards.

@Mike I hear you there... I think we've been giving those fruity little devils away at parades for the past few summers. We might have to rethink that.

@Speedy, sounds like your childhood Halloweens were very interesting. We are talking about your childhood, right?

THIS ONE IS FOR ALL GRANDMOTHERS OUT THERE. DID YOU REALLY THINK YOU COULD BASH YOUR GRANDMOTHERS POPCORN BALLS WITHOUT REBUTTLE.
I MAKE OVER 400 POPCORN BALLS EVERY YEAR. THEY ARE KNOWN ALL OVER TOWN. WHEN MY SON WAS A VOLUNTEER FIREMAN, THEY WOULD PULL UP IN OUR DRIVEWAY, LIGHTS FLASHING AND WOULD NOT LEAVE WITHOUT A SACK FULL OF THEM. I SPENT SATURDAY MORNING LAST WEEK IN KEARNEY WITH GRANDKIDS DOWN THERE, WE MADE 126 POPCORN BALLS. MY KIDS AND I HAVE BEEN MAKING THESE FOR 30 YEARS AND WE HAVE TRICK OR TREATERS STOP WHOSE PARENTS USED TO COME BY AND GET THEM WHEN THEY WERE SMALL. YOU JUST NEED TO TRY DIFFERENT RECIPES, MY RECIPE IS SIMPLE;
10 BAGS OF MICROWAVE POPCORN
1 STICK OF BUTTER
3 12OZ BAGS OF MARSHMALLOWS

POP YOUR POPCORN THE DAY BEFORE

MELT THE STICK OF BUTTER IN A LARGE PLASTIC BOWL IN TTHE MICROWAVE

DUMP THE MARSHMALLOWS IN AND WARM THEM JUST UNTIL THEY ARE SOFT
YOU WANT THIS TO RESEMBLE THE MARSHMALLOW CREME.

HAVING ALL THE POPCORN IN A LARGE TUB, COVER WITH THE MARSHMALLOW GOO

STIR UNTIL ALL BLENDED THEN FORM INTO BALLS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A SOFT BALL

YOU SHOULD END UP WITH ABOUT 36 POPCORN BALLS. EACH INDIVIDUALLY BAGGED IN
A FOLD AND CLOSE SANDWICH BAG.

We had a place back home that would give out a tooth brush and tooth paste. She was however the school nurse. I have no idea why we even took the time to stop at her house...

If Nancy can make Tootsie Rolls, I am moving into her house.

I look at the candies that made the worst list and I have to wonder what kind of spoiled brats we are bringing up. When we were young we were told we should be happy with what ever we got and say Thank You. I can not remember anything that our Dad did not like.(He could always seem to find our treats no matter where we hid them) I do remember the green pears we received were not my favorite but we still said Thank you and let me tell you popcorn balls are not near as effective as green pears if you are trying to get the local bully!

Any candy having to do with valentines day is not a good thing to give out at halloween. You also shouldn't give out anything with tread marks that got run over in some parade during the summer.

When I was a kid, I remember going trick or treating to the same houses each year and there was one house that always gave the packaged salad crackers. I could never eat them because my parents felt that she probably saved them through the year whenever she went out to eat and then gave them out at Halloween! The neatest thing I think I can remember getting at Halloween was one year someone gave out quarters and, back then (early 70's), that would buy a can of pop or a big candy bar.

Didn't do much trick or treating when I was a kid, living in the country. I will admit I am 55. When I did get to town, probably the most disappointing things were the non-caramel apples and circus peanuts. Basically anything not chocolate. To this day I maybe the only one I know that does like the peanut butter chews and chik-o-sticks. Best of all are the Reese's peanut butter pumpkins. Have a great time everyone.

Wow! Nancy brought a big load of her popcorn balls to the station. I have to admit, as far as popcorn balls go, these are pretty good.
