1940 John Deere Model L
Posted in Tractor of the Week at 01:34PM on 05/24/2010

Levi Peters of Henderson, Nebraska gave us a very nice John Deere L for this week!  Levi tells us this has always been one of his favorite tractors.

The "L" was made for about 10 years from 1937 to 1946.  Levi's model is a 1940.  It was the first John Deere tractor with a foot clutch and an upright engine.  It was tested at 9.27 horse power at the Nebraska Tractor Test.  The power plant was a 2-cylinder Hercules.  The tractor came with several options such as a belt pulley, add on PTO and hydraulic pump.

Levi says he purchased the tractor in Grand Island, Nebraska and was in pretty bad shape when he found it.  He enjoys working on old tractors and has done about 15 of them so he started to whip this L into shape. According to him, he still has 3 more tractors to go.

The kids in the picture are his grandkids and are a little older now.  Levi says two are graduating from college, two from high-school and one is a junior.

Thanks Levi for sharing your favorite machine with us.  You did a beautiful job and good luck on the last 3.  If you have a tractor you want to share with us, please send pictures and a description to the addresses above.  And click on the picture to see a close up of Levi's tractor.
