My brother pointed out that I forgot to include the PRICE of the heifers in the FUN WITH MATH example on Tuesday's post. Sorry about that. The price was $74.10. BUT, it brings up a good point. Do you realize that you had enough information to backward-calculate the buy price of the heifers using . . . ALGEBRA? Wanna see the algebraic proof? Of course you do!
SELL 1250# at $87.00 = $1087.50 gross
BUY 1006# at ?????? = ???????????????
Return on the gain = $1.40 per pound
1. 1250# minus 1006# = 244# NET pounds
2. 244# net MULTIPLED BY $1.40 Return on the Gain = $341.60 net dollar difference between SELL and BUY
3. $1087.50 gross SELL dollars MINUS $341.60 net dollar difference = $745.90 GROSS BUY DOLLARS
4. $745.90 Gross BUY dollars divided by 1006# BUY weight = $74.14 BUY PRICE PER HUNDRED (with a very small rounding differential)
