Welcome to Nebraska

Welcome to Nebraska- where ANYTHING can happen!

You know, we spend a lot of time touring the country presenting educational events on disaster preparedness and believe it or not, the fewest number of events that we do are in Nebraska.  The attitude we get is that Nebraskans are resilient, Nebraskans are always ready, and nothing surprises us.  It is a dangerous attitude.

In the last week we have had two incidents at two different ethanol plants. In the last two weeks, we have experienced freezing fog, freezing rain, blizzard conditions, icy roads, power outages and...oh yeah, we still have a pandemic declaration.

If that is not enough to get you thinking, try this on for size.

Last night, an earthquake rattled Southeastern Nebraska. Yep! You read that correctly. A 3.5 magnitude quake struck last night right in the middle of  christmas movie I was watching (about 8:53 PM).  The earthquake was centered two miles northwest of Auburn.  The quake was felt by folks in Peru, Nebraska City, and Dunbar. Though not known for its earthquakes, Nebraska has experienced several notable shakes since its founding as a state in 1867. The USGS says the most serious of them was a magnitude 5.1 quake on Nov. 15, 1877, in the east-central part of the state. No fatalities were reported, however.

Now, at www.chasing4life.org we have a complete resource library of disaster preparedness information.  You can get more info at www.ready.gov. The forecast is for snow this weekend again, and we have not yet begun to see what nature has in store for us all as the new year arrives. What's stopping you from taking care of your family?

Are you going to keep putting off educating yourself? Gonna put off getting ready for winter? Gonna stop thinking it all cannot happen here?

Folks, there's a reason why we have this blog hosted on the KRVN site. KRVN was founded because of Nebraska disasters (cool story, read it by CLICKING HERE). We're here because we're Nebraskans too. You are family, and the thought of any of you not surviving next week, next month or the new year does not sit well with any of us.

Make a New Year's resolution to get prepared at home, in your car and at your place of business.
