It's been quiet...

Yep. Not much to talk about weather-wise lately.  Believe me, I get a little bored with sunny weather everyday, but its been good for our farmers and good for Nebraska so I am not going to complain too much.  The things is, it's about to end. You all know what time of year it is, and at the time I write this, we have a small storm creeping through northern Chase County so it's starting...Nebraska storms.

Here in my office I have several televisions on and so I watch multiple news broadcasts all at once. Just moments ago, one television was covering the Interstate 5 accident in California while another was covering severe weather threats spreading across the country and tomorrow's forecast for storms.  It got me thinking...

During the Kearney tornado (which seems like FOREVER ago!), the most dangerous thing during the storm was not debris or wind, but TRAFFIC.

As the skies turn dark tomorrow, and the clouds build, take care when driving. Don't overdrive your ability in severe weather. NEVER drive in flodded roadways. Keep high profile vehicles off the roads during high winds. DON'T go out during warnings just to "catch a glimpse" or get a picture.

If you get caught in a storm with high winds, stay clear of high profile vehicles, large trailers and other vehicles that could be negatively influenced by the wind.

Leave a stopping distance between you and other traffic and stay alert.  Every driver is different from the next and each will react differently to adverse conditions or sudden changes.

When it is raining, SLOW DOWN. Turn on your lights and use your defroster to keep your windows from getting fogged up.

When the fog hits, stay to the right of the roadway. Turn on your headlights and use low beam.  If you cannot see the edge of the roadway and turn on your emergency flashers.  Wait until visibility improves before continuing.  Make sure you are WELL off the roadway.

In a hailstorm, find shelter for your car and make sure you shield your face and hands in case your windshield is compromised.

No matter where you are and how much time you spend in your car, make sure your phone is charged and you have a first aid kit with you.

When the watches and warnings begin, reassess your plans. Try to be one less person on the road and remember, storm chasing is the new national pasttime so there are a lot of folks out there NOT looking out for YOU.

The beautiful thing about KRVN Radio is that we'll bring the weather safely to you in the safety and comfort of your own home; you don't have to go out.
