I had the opportunity to visit with an old buddy from way back in the day.  He forgot about my conversion for a moment and asked, "Man, how 'bout those carcass weights?"

"I haven't the foggiest idea" came my speedy reply.  I haven't looked at carcass weight data in nearly four years.  Why would I?  Why would I look at and worry about an aggregated data set that has absolutely NOTHING to do with making money in the cattle business?  Now, you may be saying, "of course it matters!"  But I would say that reaction is nothing more than a knee-jerk reflexive reaction.  You have been hearing about the monumental importnace of carcass weights for so long, that your mind reflexively believes they are relevant solely because of the frequency with which they are mentioned. 

I'll ask the question again, and I want to you think carefully about your answer:  what do national average cattle carcass weights have to do with YOU and YOUR profitability?

The objectively true answer is: Nothing.  Never have, never will.  Sorry to bust your bubble, but that's just part of growing up, isn't it?
